A Series of 1899 $5 Large Size 'Indian Chief' Silver Certificate Mule Fr#280m with signatures Elliot/White and Serial # N16341665 graded Very Fine 30 (VF-30) with an annotation for ink present by PMG. This note displays an off white paper color with minor browning, light visible folds/creases and fairly even margins. Pink ink spot visible on the chiefs right hand side near his headdress. Large size silver certificates were a form of paper currency produced from 1878 - 1923 (Small Size until 1964) and were issued as a type of representative money. Initially made in response to the Fourth Coinage Act which placed the United States under the gold standard, the bills were meant to be redeemed for their face value in silver coin and later from June 1967 - June 1968 in raw silver bullion.
