The 1926 Sesquicentennial gold $2.5 quarter eagle is a gold commemorative issued in 1926 commemorating the 150th Anniversary of American Independence with the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Initially designed by John Frederick Lewis, John R. Sinnock adapted his own design through the original sketches of Lewis’ work. The coin features Liberty holding a scroll representing the Declaration of Independence and a torch on the obverse, while the reverse depicts Independence Hall in Philadelphia with a rising sun in the background. With a limited mintage of only 46,019 pieces, many were returned to the mint and melted because of unpopularity, therefore making most pieces that are About Uncirculated or higher scarce. All pieces were struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Parameters set for this coin were the same as its Indian Head counterpart at .900 gold, .100 copper composition, a net weight of .12094 oz. pure gold, a total weight of 4.18 grams and featured a reeded edge and 18 mm diameter.
