The Classic Head half cent was a fractional denomination pattern that was minted from 1809-1811 and resumed again in 1825-1836. Designed by Assistant Chief Mint Engraver John Reich, the obverse featured a profiled bust depiction of Liberty facing left with long curly hair. Thirteen stars encircle Liberty representing the original thirteen colonies with the date appearing below the neck. The reverse features the denomination ‘HALF CENT’ encircled by a wreath and ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’ encircling the wreath. Collectors will note this pattern was poorly struck due to the copper used during this time period, which was crude and impure. As a result, most issues circulated fairly quickly. Uncirculated and better struck pieces demand higher premiums. Parameters set for the Classic Head half cent were: a total weight of 5.44 grams of copper which featured a 23.5 mm diameter and plain edge.
