The Lincoln, Wheat Ears Reverse cent was a one cent piece (or penny) minted from 1909-1958. It became the first U.S. denomination to brandish the motto ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’, and the second coin in U.S. history to feature a president. Designed by Victor D. Brenner, this piece was issued in August 1909 to commemorate Abraham Lincoln’s 100th birthday, whose bust appears in profile on the obverse. Brenner’s design is based off a photograph of Lincoln in 1864. The reverse features two ears of wheat. Initial strikes bear Brenner’s full initials VDB on the reverse near the bottom rim, however after heavy objection they were removed. The wheat cent would not see Brenner’s initials reinstated until 1918 and would appear near his shoulder on the obverse. Standard parameters for the wheat cent were .950 copper/.050 tin & zinc composition, a total weight of 3.11 grams, and featured a plain edge with 19 mm diameter.
