Quick Overview

A Victorian circa. mid 1800's Joseph Rodgers & Sons "The Gentleman's Razor" 5/8 in. straight razor with it's original box. This piece features a beautiful Damascus steel blade etched "The Gentlemans Razor" on the face. The tang reads "Joseph Rodgers & Sons/Cutlers To Their Majesties/No. 6 Norfolk Street/Sheffield England". The blade is sharp and can cut with ease. The face shows off an original steel finish with light blemishes and strong visible etching. The tang has a clear stamp and does show some signs of light surface rust/discoloration and light surface pitting. The pivot pin allows the blade to move with ease and is not too stiff or too loose. This piece also features a very nice black celluloid handle that shows minimal hairlines and no cracks. This blade can be dated to around 1856-1861 because of a) Celluoid was first created in 1856 as a cheaper alternative to ivory and b) The stamp "Cutlers To Their Majesties" refers to Queen Victoria & Prince Albert; Prince Albert died in 1861 at age 42. Joseph Rodgers & Sons may have continued production of this blade until 1901, upon the death of Queen Victoria. The original box has extensive signs of wear and feels somewhat brittle and also has a small tear at the bottom.
