The three dollar Indian Princess Head gold piece was a unique denomination pattern strike minted by the United States government from 1854 - 1889. Designed by James B. Longacre (Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint), the three dollar gold denomination was immediately unpopular, and many speculate it’s inception revolved around the idea of purchasing larger quantities of postage stamps which cost 3¢ ea. at the time.
