The Liberty Head gold one dollar piece was the smallest coin the United States Mint produced from 1849-1854. Designed by James B. Longacre, the coin featured a profiled bust of Liberty wearing a coronet encircled by 13 stars representative of the original 13 colonies on the obverse. The reverse would feature ‘1 DOLLAR’ with the date directly below. Original designs called for an open wreath, however during its first year of mintage, the Liberty Head gold dollar would change the wreath design, making the ends closer to the ‘1’. From there on, all other years minted until 1854 would feature the ‘Close Wreath’ design. Original parameters set for the gold dollar were .900 gold, .100 copper composition, a net weight of .04837 oz pure gold, a total weight of 1.672 grams and featured a reeded edge with a 13 mm diameter.
