The Jefferson nickel is the current pattern for the five-cent piece which started its production in 1938. 1913 saw the birth of the Buffalo nickel design, however during its years of mintage mint officials noticed the difficulty in striking it’s full design, specifically the horns of the buffalo and sharpness in the date. Early 1938 would see the Buffalo nickels twenty-fifth year of mintage, meaning Congress could officially call for a redesign. A competition was held with the criteria set that the new nickel design show a portrait of the third president of the United States Thomas Jefferson and his home Monticello (because 1938 was the bicentennial year of his birth). The grand prize for the winning design would total $1,000. Out of the 390 or so designs submitted, Felix Schlags design won the competition. After several modifications were made, production began in October of 1938. By 1939, mint officials would recut the hubs for the Jefferson nickel to sharpen the steps of Monticello which were coming out hazy and dull. Because of this measure, collectors will find pieces struck with “full steps” will demand a higher premium. The original parameters set for the Jefferson nickel were: A .750 Copper/ .250 Nickel composition with a total weight of 5 grams and would feature a 21.2 mm diameter and plain edge. The Jefferson nickel would be minted at all three United States Mints’ (Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco) with Denver and San Francisco issues showing a D and S mint mark to their respective mints and Philadelphia (as in the past) would be void of any mint mark. The start of the United States involvement in World War 2 would modify the Jefferson nickels composition and mint mark design. The importance of nickel used for the war effort made it a scarce material, and although the actual amount saved for the war effort by stripping the nickels remains unknown, the Jefferson nickel became comprised of .560 Copper, .350 Silver and .090 Manganese. Known as “Wartime Nickels”, the major difference in design came in the form of the the mint marks, which were enlarged above the dome of Monticello to indicate the change in composition. For the first time since its establishment, the Philadelphia Mint would use a ‘P’ for it’s mint mark, and the Jefferson nickel sets the precedent of being the first United States coin with a P mint mark.
