During the early 1960's the United States government made an attempt to collect all circulating silver certifcates to be redeemed for physical silver bullion. It was mandated that by June 24th, 1968 all silver certificate may be exchanged for their worth in silver. The Treasury started to produce crudely poured, unstamped bars that ranged in purity from .900 to .999. All bars were marked with their actual weight in troy ounces with a grease pencil.
