Product Description
An 1840's - 1850 Marshes & Shepard Ponds Works Sheffield England 4/8 in. straight razor with an unbranded box. The blade features an original grey steel patina with some blue/purple hues within the hollow ground of the face and stamped Marshes & Shepard/Pond Works/Sheffield on the tang and very nice original bone or pressed horn handle. The blade on this razor is still sharp and can cut through paper. The pivot pin has loosened over the years and the blade moves without any tension. The stamp on the tang is still strong with the hallmarks and lettering, however the D is Shepard is partially missing. The blade is very clean with some discoloration on the spine and some light rust on the underside of the tang. The beautiful bone/horn handle is well preserved and shows no cracks or any other physical damage. The box this piece comes with is unbranded but displays very nice graphics that read "Extra Hollow Ground Fully Warranted/Price $3.00. Though the original green color in the font has faded, everything is readable. The box is in excellent condition for it's age, with only minor scuffs mainly on the corners and edges. Marshes & Shepard was operational from 1817 - 1850 with pieces marked "Pond Works" starting in 1840.
