The Seated Liberty Half Dime was a silver five cent denomination piece minted from 1837 - 1873. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this denomination and pattern underwent several changes throughout its mintage. Initial pieces struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1837 and the New Orleans Mint in 1838 featured no stars on the obverse design. Furthermore, pieces struck after 1838 had a drapery fold added to Liberty’s elbow. Basic designs for the half dime were the Goddess of Liberty in the seated position facing left on a rock holding a shield brandishing the word ‘LIBERTY’ and a flag in her left hand on the obverse. The reverse featured the denomination ‘HALF DIME’ encircled by a wreath. ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’ surrounds the wreath on the outermost fields. Overall, a total of five varieties were produced in this series. Initial parameters set for the Seated Liberty half dime were: .900 silver, .100 copper composition, a total weight of 1.34 grams featuring a 15.5 mm diameter and a reeded edge. In 1853, the Seated Liberty Half Dimes weight was reduced from 1.34 grams to 1.24 grams under the Act of February 21st, 1853. All other parameters remained the same until the end of the half dimes mintage in 1873.
