The Capped Bust Half Dime was a short lived five cent silver pattern minted from 1829 - 1837. Although Second Chief Engraver of the Mint William Kneass is credited with the design, it is believed he used the sketches of John Reich (former engraver of the Philadelphia Mint) to produce the final pattern. The obverse featured a profiled bust of Liberty facing left. Liberty is depicted in a draped cloth with a cap adorning her head, which is where the pattern derives its name. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies encircle Liberty with the date appearing below the bust. The reverse features an eagle with it’s wings outstretched. The denomination ‘5C’ appears below the eagle. Original parameters set for the Capped Bust half dime were a composition of .8924 silver & .1076 copper, total weight of 1.35 grams and a 15.5 mm diameter featuring a reeded edge. These parameters were changed however in 1837, and the weight was lowered to 1.34 grams, and the fineness increased to .900 silver. Overall the aggregate silver purity remained the same.
